Blasting, also known as sandblasting, is one of the basic methods of surface treatment of carbon steel. This technique makes it possible to effectively remove scale and roughen the surface for coating. In our modern blast box, which is equipped with a full-floor abrasive collection, we use sharp-edged steel grit. If the primer is not immediately applied to a surface that has undergone blasting, we are able to passivate the surface, protecting it from corrosion for up to several weeks.

Dimensions and capacities

We have one blast box with rails for handling heavy parts. The area in front of the blast box is serviced by cranes with load capacities of 10,000 kg and 20,000 kg.

Standards

Blasting is usually carried out according to CSN ISO 8501-1.

The final surface quality is supervised by our team of technicians from the quality department. On request, they will issue a report on performance of work on the order, according to CSN EN 10204 – Declaration of Conformity with the Order. If necessary, it is possible to agree with the quality manager on the issuance of an Inspection Certificate according to CSN EN 10240. It is necessary to know according to what standard you require the test and to have defined parameters for it. Learn more about testing in our blog articles.

Handling and packaging

The goal of each technological procedure is to optimize the final product with regard to the cost of the process performed. If the blasting of a carbon steel part is its final surface treatment and does not proceed with painting etc., the packaging and shipping of those parts is carried out according to the customer's wishes. The parts can be shipped in bulk or the same packaging as for painted parts - i.e. wooden beams, prisms and pallets - in order to be economical.

Quality, audits, certificates

The surface after blasting of steel parts is evaluated according to CSN ISO 8501-1, which determines the degree of surface rust A, B, C, D and the degree of surface preparation by blasting Sa1, Sa2, Sa2½, Sa3. The surface after blasting corresponds to the required degree of surface preparation Sa. During blasting, internal stress is created due to the kinetic energy of the abrasive. In certain cases this manifests itself by deformation – sagging of the blasted surface, which is more pronounced for surfaces blasted on one side and also for surfaces of parts made of material up to 3 mm thick blasted on both sides. Blasting increases surface roughness. After blasting, the parts are blown with compressed air. However, a thin layer of fine dust may remain on the surface. The resulting surface of the structural carbon steel part is not protected against corrosion. Oxidation begins almost immediately.

The final surface quality is supervised by a team of technicians from the quality department. On request, they will issue a report on performance of work on the order, according to CSN EN 10204 – Declaration of Conformity with the Order.
